AVOID PENALTIES!

Beginning January 1, 2020, California residents must either:

  • Have qualifying health insurance coverage*

  • Obtain an exemption from the requirement to have coverage

  • Pay a penalty when they file their state income tax return

*This means you must bring your Form 1095-A, -B, or -C to your tax appointment

Many people already have qualifying health insurance coverage through:

  • Employer-sponsored plans, including those who are IHSS providers

  • Coverage purchased through Covered California or directly from insurers

  • Medicare

  • Medi-Cal

Sexual Harassment Training

California Sexual Harassment Training Requirement

(for businesses with 5 or more employees)

As of 1-1-2021, California law requires all employers of 5 or more employees to provide 1 hour of sexual harassment and abusive conduct prevention training to nonsupervisory employees and 2 hours of sexual harassment and abusive conduct prevention training to supervisors and managers once every two years. (CA Govt. Code 12950.1) The law requires the training to include practical examples of harassment based on gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.

Check here for more information.

The employer is required to pay for the cost of the training, as well as wages for the time spent being trained.

You have a few options for the training, such as:

1. Private companies that provide the training - there's a bunch online, ranging around $10-40 per person. Just make sure they provide the California-compliant certification.

2. Your workers' compensation or business liability insurance companies may offer the training.

3. Finally, the CA Dept. of Fair Employment and Housing provides a free online training here. Please read the entire directions. You will not be able to save your progress or refresh the page. After completing the course, each employee/supervisor will need to print, save, or take a screenshot of the certification provided upon completion (it will not be automatically saved or emailed to you).

Please make sure, as the employer, you keep a copy of the certificate for each employee and supervisor (including all owners) in your records. Anytime there is a new employee, make sure they complete the training as soon as possible (ideally before beginning their employment). Training must be renewed every 2 years. If you have less than 5 employees, it is still recommended that you provide the training although it is optional.
